As Mardi Gras celebration took place on the main streets of historic town Deadwood, South Dakota, the fans could hear Rev. Faith Goehring say "wedding in progress". The float stopped in front of 4-Aces Casino/Hampton Inn and announced "We are going to have a wedding tonight".
As the couples progressed up main street, which really means headed south, the couple waved to their friends. At the Mineral Palace Hotel and Gaming, Rev. Faith began "there is a wedding in progress on this float. Say "I DO" if you take this bride to be your lawfully wedded wife?" The crowd clapped as the couples said "I do". There was a small roaring of the crowd as the float neared The Old Style Saloon #10.
The news traveled fast in this old 1876 gold mining town. The Black Hills echoed, "A wedding is in progress". The crowd quieted while Rev. Faith led the Exchange of Rings ceremony. After a holding of the breath to be sure the rings were on safely, not to roll off the float, "Silver Dreams Limo Service", which was directly behind the wedding float, began to blast her horn. The music "Chapel of Love" was turned full volume as the crowd clapped, cheered and waved to their friends, John and Beverley from Hot Springs, South Dakota. Historic Franklin Hotel was the planned final stopping place to announce "Mr. and Mrs. to the waiting fans, but the crowd created such a dynamic response to this traditional event, performed on a float by Black Hills Wedding Chapel, that Rev. Goehring decided to announce the wedding couple as "married" right in the middle of Shine Street, between Gold Dust and Silverado. This was February 24, 2006.
February 25, 2006 Mardi Gras celebration continued and was open to all who wanted to participate in the free parade. Rev. Faith, Black Hills Wedding Chapel, Silver Dreams Limo Service, and local Hill City employees threw beads from their entries. The sound engineer, Steve Olson, a local active Deadwood resident, controlled the crowd as the float pasts in front of "The Heart of Deadwood Properties" and Saloon #10 by raising and lowering the volume as the sound equipment blasted out "Going to the Chapel and We're Gonna Get Married". There was dancing, cheering and clapping on the red brick streets. As last year, during the last block of the parade between Silverado and the Historic Franklin Hotel, Faith and her friends began to take the float decorations apart and throw it to the crowd. What a way to finish a wedding celebration in the midst of Deadwood, South Dakota's rendition of Mardi Gras!!
